Consider the scriptures
#31 – Proverbs 16:3
Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit thy works unto the LORD, And thy thoughts shall be established.”
This scripture is essentially saying on the surface that if we commit our actions to the Lord, they will succeed.
The word for “Commit” means “to roll” and is often used in the context of rolling a stone.
Metaphorically, it can refer to “trusting in the Lord”.
When I think of Jesus being buried in the tomb for three days, He not only had to have perfect trust in the Father that He would be raised from the dead, but also that the stone would be rolled away.
The scriptures also show the same term being used to mock Jesus as He suffered on the cross. Psalm 22:8 says, “He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: Let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.”
The term is used as if he literally rolled upon himself. In doing so, Jesus brought to Himself all of our sin and shame and then rolled away the stone of “death” victoriously.
The “works” mentioned here are actions that we do.
The verse goes on to say the “thoughts shall be established” meaning the “plans” will be “fixed in place” or “made ready”.
Proverbs 23:7 days, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.”
The way that we think and how we believe can affect the outcome.
While the “works” here can be Godly works, it can also refer to actions at our workplace, actions we take in our hobbies or anything else that we might do.
To fully trust in the Lord is to “roll the stone”, whatever that stone may be.
“Rolling” implies movement. We must have an active faith, and cannot just sit by idle and be able to see our plans succeed.
In this scripture we also see that the actions were based on a plan, and were not simply spontaneous. This is not to say that God doesn’t work in the spontaneous, but God is also a God of order.
When we commit our pre-planned actions to God, He establishes them and makes them successful. Yet, in Him doing His part, we still have a role to play to see that success manifest.
Is there a stone you are rolling in your own life?
Be assured that He never leaves you and you are not rolling it alone.
